Moving a Baby Grand Piano Downstairs for an Awesome Client

How We Safely Moved a Baby Grand Piano Down a Staircase in South Tampa

At Swift Moves, we handle all kinds of specialty moving jobs throughout South Tampa and the greater Tampa Bay area—but moving a baby grand piano down a narrow staircase is something we normally avoid. The risk of injury and property damage is usually too high to justify it.

But when one of our long-time commercial clients—an interior design firm we assist several times a year—asked for help during a large, multi-day home installation project, we stepped up. They trust us with high-end, luxury furniture moves in South Tampa, and this project was no exception. One look at the floors, artwork, and décor and you know: this is a home where precision matters.

The Challenge: Moving a Baby Grand Piano Down 17 Narrow Stairs

The homeowner needed us to move their baby grand piano from their previous South Tampa home to the new property where we were installing their new designer furniture. The problem? A long, tight staircase. There was an elevator—which briefly gave us hope—but it was much too small for a piano of this size.

When we initially told the client we weren’t comfortable with the move, they said they would try to find another company.

And that’s when our ears perked up.

We pride ourselves on being one of the most trusted specialty movers in South Tampa, and we weren’t about to let another moving company step in, make us look bad, or potentially take our long-term client. So the team and I met, discussed the risks, and put together a safe, smart plan.

Our South Tampa Piano Moving Plan

Nothing complicated—just expert technique, teamwork, and six of the strongest movers in Florida:

  • Removed the piano legs
  • Wrapped and protected the instrument carefully
  • Secured grip points for controlled movement
  • Coordinated a safe descent down the 17 steps
  • Used slow, steady, joint communication the entire way

I don’t normally work on-site during moves, but for this one, I joined the crew to oversee safety. The real credit goes to the team: Joe, Cedric, Josh, Jarrod, and Marquel. They handled the heavy lifting and delivered the kind of precision that sets Swift Moves apart from other Tampa moving companies.

The Final Delivery

After getting the baby grand safely down the stairs, we carefully transported it two blocks to the new home, brought it inside, and reassembled it. The photo in this post shows Joe and Cedric at the drop-off location. (For the record: Cedric is not holding a cigar—though the angle makes it look that way!)

Both the interior design firm and the homeowner were thrilled. The team felt proud for pulling off a unique specialty move, and I was thrilled because our clients were happy—as always, that’s our goal.
